The Board of Directors of Convergys Corporation (NYSE:CVG) yesterday today elected one of its members, Philip A. Odeen, to be non-executive chairman effective December 31, 2007.
Odeen replaces James F. Orr who announced on February 20 that he would retire from the position of chairman on December 31.
Odeen was non-executive Chairman of AVAYA, a telecommunications company, prior to the sale of that company, and the former chairman of Reynolds & Reynolds. In addition, from the fall of 2005 until mid 2006, Odeen served as CEO of QinetiQ North American Operations, supporting QinetiQ Inc., a leading U.K. defense technology company. He continues to serve on its U.S. Board.
Prior to that, Odeen was chairman of TRW Inc., which was acquired by Northrop Grumman. Earlier, he ran one of TRW’s business units and served as the company’s senior representative in Washington.
Previously, he held positions as president and chief executive officer of BDM, as vice chairman for Coopers & Lybrand’s management consulting services, with the Office of the Secretary of Defense and the National Security Council staff, as principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense (Systems Analysis), and as head of the Defense and Arms Control staff for then-National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger. In 1997, Secretary of Defense William Cohen selected him to chair the National Defense Panel. He is a former member and vice chairman of the Defense Science Board and a member of the Chief of Naval Operations Executive Panel.
In addition to Convergys, Odeen is a director of two other New York Stock Exchange companies: AES and Northrop Grumman. He is also chairman of the Henry Jackson Foundation.
Mr. Odeen received a BA in government from the University of South Dakota, was a Fulbright Scholar to the United Kingdom, and earned a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin.
