Today, February 4, 2013, The National List of Attorneys published the white paper on debt collection law in Alabama written by attorney Brent Yarborough and his law firm Zarzaur & Schwartz, P.C.

Brent Yarborough is an attorney with the Birmingham, AL, law firm of Zarzaur & Schwartz, P.C. The firm has been listed with NL since 1982—31 years. Brent practices in the areas of collections, creditors’ rights, commercial litigation, and the defense of consumer law claims.  He is a frequent speaker and author on topics related to collections and consumer law.  Brent earned his B.A. degree, cum laude, from Birmingham-Southern College and his J.D. degree from Cornell University.  He serves on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Retail Collection Attorneys (NARCA), on the executive board of the Birmingham Bar Association’s Bankruptcy and Commercial Law Section, and on the steering committee of the Central Alabama Financial Education Coalition. Other industry associations Brent participates in include the ACA Member Attorney Program and the ABA Consumer Financial Services Committee.

When asked to tell us something interesting or unusual that debt collection work has taught him, Brent said, “At some point or another, we are all buyers and sellers. And despite the sage advice of Polonius, most of us are borrowers and lenders, as well. I find it interesting to work with the laws that govern those simple, every day transactions.”

Brent says there is nothing especially unique about Alabama law as it applies to creditors. “However, the application and interpretation of the law differs from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. It is important to work with lawyers who truly know and understand the different courts throughout the state.”

Brent lives in Birmingham, AL, where he has been with Zarzaur & Schwartz representing creditors since 2002. Zarzaur & Schwartz, P.C. is a full service creditors’ rights law firm. It serves its many local and national clients throughout the State of Alabama, in all courts and jurisdictions. The firm specializes in the areas of commercial collections, consumer collections, medical collections, utility collections, student loan collections, collateral recovery, commercial bankruptcy, consumer bankruptcy, and the defense of consumer law claims.  The firm has received a number of performance and partnership awards from many of their valued clients.

Outside of collections, the firm regularly participates in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and in projects with Habitat for Humanity. They also partner with Oasis (nonprofit counseling for women and children), Triumph (support for individuals with developmental disabilities), and the Central Alabama Financial Education Coalition.

Outside of work, Brent enjoys playing, coaching, and watching lacrosse. But, he says, “These days I do a lot more coaching and watching than I do playing. I am the head coach of a high school boys’ varsity lacrosse team and I serve on the executive board of our local chapter of US Lacrosse.”

The National List thanks Brent for submitting this paper and for giving us the chance to get to know him a little better.  You can access the paper at http://www.nationallist.com/white_papers/alabama.
