The Congressional battle that resulted in today’s shut down of the federal government did not affect the issue at the very heart of the debate–healthcare reform.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act healthcare insurance exchanges, called marketplaces, opened for business in most states today.

The shutdown, which has halted numerous federal government services and furloughed hundreds of thousands of government workers, also will not affect Medicare, Medicaid, or the Veterans Administration health services. For healthcare providers, it will be business as usual, at least as far as submitting claims and seeking reimbursement.
