We spend more and more of our lives constructing ourselves online – whether that’s a carefully curated Facebook page, frequently updated Pinterest board, or tweeting our reactions to news stories.

While consumers may be using social media to interact with friends, family, and some businesses – that doesn’t mean this is their preferred means of interacting with a collection agency at all.

Are there opportunities for collection agencies to utilize social media?

Maybe. But not in the way you might be hoping.

Many collection agencies have used social media sites for skip-tracing efforts. Google searches will often bring up Facebook pages where, depending on the technological savvy of the consumer, publicly available information can be gleaned with some clicking and some scrolling. You’re on the safe side of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) as long as all you’re doing is viewing.
