Law enforcement officials in Boulder, Colorado, have arrested 22 year-old Kevin McGregor and charged him with felony first-degree murder in what appears to have been a robbery gone wrong in the early morning of March 18.

During the incident, McGregor approached a couple walking home from a party in Boulder and attempted to rob them.  An altercation ensued in which McGregor fired a handgun—one shot was fired into the air; the second shot hit and fatally wounded University of New Hampshire student, Todd Walker, home for spring break in Colorado.

Somewhere in the sordid middle of McGregor’s criminal past is this detail, provided in a story on fosters.com: “McGregor was previously convicted of second-degree assault and collection of a debt by extortionate means in March 2009…”

The events that led to Walker’s senseless killing are appalling.  Hopefully mainstream media outlets and opportunistic consumer “advocates” won’t cheapen the losses of a university, a community, and above all a family by playing semantic games with McGregor’s rap sheet.

McGregor was an extortionist.  And now he’s an accused murderer.  Out of respect for Mr. Walker, don’t call McGregor a debt collector.
