Courts Plan to Disclose Names of Those Who Owe Overdue Fines

Getting your name in print just got easier in Rhode Island. All you gotta do? Don?t pay your court fines.

According to a story in the Providence Journal, Rhode Island recently passed legislation that reinstates requirements that the court make public the names, addresses, and amounts owed on a quarterly basis. Sure, it?s probably not the exact kind of publicity most people are looking for. Beggars — especially those who don’t pay their court fines — can?t really be choosers, though, right?

The law had previously been considered to be unconstitutional. With the revisions, though, it?s game on for name disclosure. The revised version, which the committee passed, requires the courts to prepare a quarterly list of people who have owed fines for more than 90 days, are not part of a court-ordered payment plan and are not appealing the fines.
