Many Floridians are turning their backs on governmental agencies whose purpose is to help parents collect child support, and are instead looking to debt collection agencies to help.
Though using a collection agency means paying a fee, many parents see that as a necessary inconvenience in collecting what often works out to be large amounts.
A report filed by television station WFTV said that they could get no response from the Florida Department of Revenue, the governmental agency in charge of child support collections. WFTV did share that officials “bragged about collecting more than a billion dollars last year. But they left almost the same amount uncollected.”
Critics of the service provided by private collection agencies argue that the collection agencies are taking what’s rightfully a child’s.
